Elephas vs Rewire Text
Elephas has grown from a Mac writing assistant into an AI workspace: its Super Brain indexes your documents so you can ask questions and get answers with citations, and a system-wide hotkey brings AI writing actions into any Mac app. Rewire Text is a narrower tool: select text anywhere, press a hotkey, transform it, done, on macOS and Windows.
The overlap is the writing-actions slice. The biggest practical difference is the pricing model: Elephas is a subscription, Rewire Text is a $29 one-time purchase. Which is fair, because they are different amounts of product. The question is which amount you need.

Where Elephas is the better pick
- The knowledge base. Super Brain indexes PDFs, notes, and web pages, then answers questions about them with citations. Rewire Text has nothing in this category.
- iPhone and iPad. Higher Elephas tiers include iOS and iPadOS apps. Rewire Text is desktop-only.
- PII redaction. Elephas can strip 28 kinds of personal data from text before it goes to a cloud model. Rewire Text's answer to the same worry is different: use a local model and nothing leaves the machine at all.
- Built-in credits. The subscription includes usage, so there is no key to set up if you do not want one.
Where Rewire Text is the better pick
- You own it. $29 once, no account, no monthly bill, no tier to outgrow. Buying your tools instead of renting them is the whole philosophy here.
- Windows. One license covers a Mac and a Windows PC. Elephas stops at Apple platforms.
- Deterministic transforms. The 43 mechanical transforms (case, encoding, whitespace, Markdown, JSON) run instantly on-device. Elephas has no equivalent, and its AI actions spend credits or tokens on work that does not need a model.
- BYOK that actually replaces the bill. With Rewire Text, your key or your local model is the whole cost story. With Elephas, a key supplements a subscription.
Which should you choose?
- You want an AI workspace over your documents, on Apple platforms, and the subscription earns its keep: Elephas. The knowledge base is the product; judge it on that.
- You want text transforms on a hotkey and are done with subscriptions: Rewire Text. For this job, paying monthly buys nothing extra.
- You use Windows at all: Rewire Text, by default.
Questions
Does Elephas still charge a subscription if I bring my own API key?
Yes, per its pricing page. Bringing a key changes which model handles your requests, but the monthly plan remains. Rewire Text has no subscription at all: $29 once, and AI calls go straight to your provider or a local model.
Is Elephas available for Windows?
No. Elephas runs on macOS, with iOS and iPadOS apps on higher tiers. Rewire Text runs on macOS and Windows on one license.
Can Elephas do non-AI transforms?
No. It is an AI tool throughout. Rewire Text ships 43 deterministic transforms (case, encoding, formatting, Markdown, developer tools) that run instantly on-device with no key or credits.
Is Rewire Text a knowledge base or second brain?
No. It has no document indexing, no chat over your files, and no citations. If a personal knowledge base is what you are after, Elephas is built for that and Rewire Text is not.
How do the costs compare over time?
Elephas starts at $19 per month (less on the yearly plan), so one year on its cheapest paid tier costs several times Rewire Text’s $29 one-time price. Whether that is worth it depends entirely on whether you use the knowledge-base features; for text transforms alone, it is a lot of subscription.
