Rewrite selected text with AI, in any app
Rewire Text puts AI rewriting on a global hotkey. Select text in any application, press the hotkey, and pick a transform from a command palette: proofread, summarize, change the tone, translate, or give a custom instruction. The result streams into a preview, and one more keypress replaces the original text right where it sits. No browser tab, no chatbot, no copying back and forth.
The copy-paste loop, retired
The usual way to run AI over a paragraph goes like this: select the text, copy it, switch to a ChatGPT tab, paste, type an instruction, wait, copy the answer, switch back, and paste it over the original. Nine steps, two app switches, and the chatbot usually wraps the answer in quotes or commentary you then have to trim.
With Rewire Text the same edit is three steps, and you never leave the app you are in:
- Select the text. Anywhere: an email draft, an Obsidian note, a Discord message, a web form.
- Press Cmd+Shift+, (macOS) or Ctrl+Shift+, (Windows). The command palette opens with your selection already captured.
- Type a few letters to find a transform, press Enter, watch the result stream into the preview, and press Enter again. The rewritten text replaces your selection in place, and your clipboard is restored to whatever it held before.
The transforms return only the resulting text. No preamble, no "Here's a more professional version," no Markdown fences to clean up.
What it looks like in practice
A few examples. Each one is a single transform picked from the palette, run on the selected text.
Before
I just wanted to quickly reach out and see if you might possibly have some time at some point this week to hop on a call so we can talk through some of the open questions around the launch timeline.
After
Do you have time this week for a call about the open launch-timeline questions?
Before
Their going to review the propsal on thursday, so we should of sent them the updated numbers allready.
After
They're going to review the proposal on Thursday, so we should have sent them the updated numbers already.
Before
They want us to sponsor the conference again. $8k. We got basically nothing out of it last year.
After
Thank you for thinking of us again for the conference. After reviewing what the sponsorship delivered for us last year, we have decided to pass this time. We would be glad to revisit it in the future.
There are 18 fixed AI transforms (tone, writing assistance, structure), one-click translation into 29+ languages, and a free-form custom instruction for everything else. An instruction you keep retyping can be saved as a custom transform: name it once and it runs from the palette like the built-ins.
Your key, your model, your data
Rewire Text does not run its own AI service. You connect a provider you choose: Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, OpenAI, xAI Grok, OpenRouter, or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint. Your text goes straight from your machine to that provider, never through our servers, and your key is stored in the operating system's keychain. Prefer to keep everything on your own hardware? Run a local model through Ollama, LM Studio, or llama.cpp instead. The AI setup guide covers both paths, including free ways to start.

Questions
Which apps does it work in?
Any app where you can select text: browsers, email clients, Word and Google Docs, Slack, Discord, Obsidian, IDEs, CMS admin panels, web forms. Rewire Text captures the selection through the clipboard, so it does not depend on per-app plugins. A small number of apps handle simulated paste unusually and may place the result next to the selection instead of replacing it; the result is on your clipboard either way.
Do I need a ChatGPT subscription?
No. Rewire Text is bring-your-own-key: it talks directly to a provider with an API key you supply. A free Google AI Studio key or a free OpenRouter model is enough to start. You can also skip the cloud entirely and run a local model.
What does each AI transform cost to run?
You pay your provider directly, with no markup. For everyday transforms on the cheaper model tiers this is typically pennies per month, and the app shows you a running cost estimate in Settings.
Can I check the result before it replaces my text?
Yes. The result streams into a preview pane inside the palette. Press Enter to accept and paste it in place, or Escape to dismiss and keep your original text.
Can I run more than one transform in a row?
Yes. While a result is previewing, press Tab to feed it back in as the input for the next transform, as many times as you like. A breadcrumb shows the chain you have built, undo and redo step through it, and Enter accepts the final result. The full window has the same flow through a "Use as input" button.
What happens if I press the hotkey without selecting anything?
The palette shows a "No text captured" notice instead of running a transform on nothing. It never pastes an empty result over your work.
