RewriteBar vs Rewire Text
RewriteBar and Rewire Text solve the same moment: the text in front of you needs a fix, and you would rather not route it through a chatbot tab. Both sit a keystroke away (RewriteBar in the Mac menu bar, Rewire Text in the menu bar or system tray), both act on the text you have selected, and both cost $29 one time with your own API key. They are the two most directly comparable tools in this category.
From there they diverge. RewriteBar is a Mac-only AI writing assistant with unusually deep macOS integrations. Rewire Text runs on macOS and Windows, and pairs its AI transforms with 43 deterministic transforms that involve no model at all. Which one fits depends on your platforms and on how much of your text work is mechanical. Both sides of that trade are laid out below, including where RewriteBar is the better choice.
At a glance
| Rewire Text | RewriteBar | |
|---|---|---|
| Platforms | macOS and Windows | macOS only (13+). Their FAQ states there is no Windows version and none is planned. |
| Price | $29 one-time | $29 one-time (Standard, 1 device) or $59 (Pro, 3 devices plus a year of their Gateway cloud). Extra devices $19 each. Optional Gateway subscription $40/year. |
| License and trial | One license, any 2 devices, managed by you. 7-day fully functional trial, then a core set of transforms stays free. 14-day refund. | 1 active device on the $29 license. Credit-metered trial (35,000 one-time credits, no card). 14-day refund. |
| How you trigger it | Global hotkey and command palette in any app, plus a full window for longer text | Menu bar and a configurable hotkey, plus PopClip, Apple Shortcuts, and a URL scheme |
| Non-AI transforms | 43 transforms (case, encoding, formatting and cleanup, Markdown, developer tools). Instant, on-device, no key, no network. | None. Commands like Title Case and Format JSON exist, but they run through a language model like everything else. |
| AI transforms | 18 fixed transforms (tone, proofread, summarize, and more), one-click translation into 29+ languages, free-form custom instructions, and custom transforms you save and reuse | A 50+ template prompt library plus custom commands, variables, per-command shortcuts, and multi-step workflows |
| Bring your own key | Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, OpenAI, xAI Grok, and OpenRouter built in, plus any OpenAI-compatible endpoint. Through OpenRouter and compatible endpoints, that reaches hundreds of models from effectively every major provider. | 25+ dedicated provider integrations, or their managed Gateway cloud with no key setup |

Where RewriteBar is the better pick
Credit where it is due. RewriteBar has been shipping since 2024 and does several things Rewire Text does not:
- Deeper macOS integration. It can be triggered from PopClip, driven by Apple Shortcuts, and scripted through a URL scheme. If your Mac workflow is built on those, that is a real advantage.
- A managed cloud option. Its Gateway service means you can skip API keys entirely and start with bundled credits. Rewire Text is strictly your-key-or-local; the closest equivalent is a free Google AI Studio key, which is easy but still a setup step.
- More prompt tooling. Prompt variables, per-command keyboard shortcuts, saved multi-step command workflows, and a side-by-side before/after view. Rewire Text has saved custom transforms and chains transforms interactively in its palette, but it has no variables and no per-transform shortcuts.
- Apple Intelligence as a provider. On Apple Silicon it can use the on-device Apple models without any extra software.
Where Rewire Text is the better pick
- You use Windows, or Windows and a Mac. RewriteBar's FAQ states there is no Windows version and none is planned. Rewire Text treats both platforms as first-class, and one $29 license covers any two devices, so a Mac laptop and a Windows desktop share it.
- Mechanical transforms without a model. In RewriteBar, everything runs through a language model, including Title Case and Format JSON. That means those commands need a configured model, cost tokens or credits, take as long as the model takes, and a model can silently alter structured data like JSON or encoded strings. Rewire Text's 43 deterministic transforms are plain code: instant, offline, exact, and free to run, every time.
- Useful before any AI setup. Install Rewire Text and the deterministic half works immediately, no key, no model, no account. RewriteBar does nothing until a model is configured or its Gateway is active.
- Two devices for the same $29. RewriteBar's $29 covers one device; a second costs $19 more.
- A simpler trial. Seven days with everything working, rather than a bundle of trial credits to reason about.
Which should you choose?
- Mac-only, AI rewriting is the whole job, and you automate with Shortcuts or PopClip: RewriteBar is a good tool and a reasonable choice. That is the honest answer.
- Windows appears anywhere in your setup: Rewire Text, because of the two, only it runs there.
- Your text work mixes mechanical fixes (case, whitespace, Markdown, encoding) with AI rewrites: Rewire Text, because the mechanical half should not cost tokens or require a model.
- You refuse to touch an API key, ever: RewriteBar's Gateway removes that step. With Rewire Text the free-key route (Google AI Studio, or a free OpenRouter model) takes a few minutes once, and the setup guide walks through it.
Questions
Is RewriteBar available for Windows?
No. RewriteBar is macOS-only, and its own FAQ states that no Windows version is planned. Rewire Text runs on macOS and Windows, and one license covers any two devices across both.
Can RewriteBar convert case or format JSON without AI?
It ships commands with those names, but they run through a language model like every other RewriteBar command, so they need a configured model and consume tokens or credits. Rewire Text runs its 43 case, encoding, formatting, Markdown, and developer transforms as ordinary code: instant, offline, exact, and free to run.
Do both work with local models?
Yes. Both support Ollama and LM Studio. RewriteBar additionally supports Apple Intelligence and Osaurus on the Mac; Rewire Text additionally supports llama.cpp and any local server that exposes an OpenAI-compatible API.
Which one is cheaper?
The headline price is the same: $29 one time. The differences are behind it. Rewire Text covers any 2 devices; RewriteBar covers 1 device, with extra devices at $19 each. RewriteBar includes 35,000 one-time credits for its managed Gateway cloud; Rewire Text has no credit system because AI calls go directly to your provider or a local model, with no markup.
Can I try both before deciding?
Yes, and it is worth doing. Rewire Text has a 7-day fully functional trial. RewriteBar has a credit-metered trial with no card required. An afternoon with each on your own text will tell you more than any comparison page.
The afternoon test
Download Rewire Text and run it on your own text for a week, free. If the deterministic half alone does not earn the hotkey, the AI half gets seven days to make its case too.
